Ready for A No Makeup Summer?

Summer is right around the corner and if you are like me, you love to be able to wash your face, put on some lip gloss and hit the streets. However, it can be hard to do that when your skin is in full rebellion against you after a week of makeup, hairspray, and the stress of your work week is showing itself on your forehead. I thought that once I left my teenage years behind that I no longer had to deal with breakouts but little did I know that I would need to take even better care of my skin as an adult. Since I left Noxema and Clean & Clear in my rearview I have been searching for a new skincare routine that will allow me to put the foundation to the side and let my melanin speak for itself. Here are five Black-owned skin care brands to tap into this summer to get your skin selfie ready:

  1. Topicals

At Topicals, they only use ingredients and herbals that have been scientifically-proven via third-party, peer-reviewed clinical studies. They formulate in partnership with their scientific advisory board. They are constantly improving our formulas based on customer feedback and new clinical findings to ensure that our products work effectively, efficiently, and gently on all skin types. Topicals products are always free from dyes and animal testing.

  2. Rosen

Traditional breakout solutions have often left diverse skin types and concerns out of the conversation, but Rosen is here to change that. Their routines use clean-ical ingredients to focus on the prevention and repair of hyperpigmentation and breakouts in the acne aisle. All of their products and routines are developed through the lens of women of color, to ensure the diverse concerns we deal with are addressed in the acne aisle.

  3. Black Girl Sunscreen

Black Girl Sunscreen was designed to start the conversation around sun protection and education. BGS took the #1 reason Black women weren’t wearing sunscreen and solved it in a way that connected with them specifically. Our community matters and when it comes to melanoma, Black people have a lower survival rate due to late diagnosis compared to other races. Decreasing the risk of melanoma is just as important as decreasing the number of people that die from it, wearing sunscreen is essential.

  4. Hyper Skin

Black and brown skin has been left out of the beauty conversation…until now. They’re hyper-focused on formulas that treat the unique needs of skin of color and that work well on Black skin, on brown skin. On all skin tones. We’re a modern clinical brand motivated by the disappointment of yesterday's skincare options. Hyper Skin formulas are packed with clean proven clinical ingredients and powerful natural botanicals that deliver notable results.

  5. Buttah Skin

Buttah was founded in 2018. They unite the best of nature and science in highly effective products for both women and men, formulated to reveal more radiant results. Each Buttah Skin product targets the issues we face everyday - dryness, discoloration, oiliness and blemishes with simple, proven-effective, good-for-you ingredients that leave your skin glowing, healthy and renewed.
